Abstract

Environmental problems are rising day by day and everyone is concerned about global warming and climate change globally but local and national environmental problems are less concerned. Young people can play an active role in protecting and improving the environment. They can change their lifestyle which can help to save the environment. They can make their homes, schools and youth organizations more environment friendly by adopting environment friendly practices, recycling of different materials as well as preserving resources such as water and electricity. This is the major impetus for green products and green marketing. In this paper we have focused on the youth can and must help save Mother Earth because our existence depends upon the planet we live in. In a small way, we must at least decrease the burden of nature. We should keep in mind that we must always observe the ecological balance in nature.

Introduction

Environment is the surrounding things. It includes living things and natural forces. The environment of living things provides conditions for development and growth as well as danger and damage. Living things do not simply exist in their environment. They constantly interact with it. Organisms change in response to conditions in their environment. The environment consists of the interactions among plants, animals, soil, water, temperature, light, and other living and non-living things.

As we saw in the past, there are many more rules, laws, conventions are made for protecting the environment but there is no effective implementation. For this implementation youth play a vital role. Young people constitute a large part of the world’s population and young people will have to live longer with the consequences of current environmental decisions than will their elders.

There are many environmental crises in the world. Now people are being active in the conservation of environment. But without the participation of youth it’s impossible to conserve the environment. The youth is the light of the darkened society.

Young people can play an active role in protecting and improving the environment. They can change their lifestyle and how it affects the environment. They can make their homes, schools and youth organizations more environmentally friendly by adopting environmentally friendly practices, recycling of different materials as well as preserving resources such as water and electricity. Engaging youth in environmental protection not only creates direct impact on changing youth behaviors and attitudes, but possibly influence their parents, relatives and families.

Role of Youth

Youth are back bone of the nation. They can change the future of the society with their well-being and courageous behavior. Unfortunately today we find the youth those who are more interested in other places which are not useful to them as well as nationally. They choose to spend their days doing drugs and playing video games. They spend their nights partying and living it up, so to speak. More and more young men of this age group are sitting at home in front of their televisions playing games all day instead of bettering themselves or going to work. They have no vision and if they do have dreams they do not have the drive to make any attempt at achieving them.

Some initiates taken by youth in India

CLEAN-India (Community Led Environment Action Network)

It is a nationwide initiative on environmental assessment, awareness, action and advocacy. It is DA’s flagship programme and involves school students and communities with the vision of developing cleaner environments for their towns and cities. This programme mobilizes students and young professionals to prevent environmental degradation and improve all major towns and cities of India; through a network of 300 schools, 60,000 students, 800 teachers and 28 NGO partners in 78 towns of the country. It aims at achieving sustainable development by addressing environmental, social and economic goals.

CLEAN-India began primarily as an urban programme and is now expanding its reach to peri-urban areas. DA has a vision of expanding it both, geographically and thematically. The programme plans to provide adequate training and knowledge to explore and address various issues like WASH, waste management, energy conservation, climate change and sustainable livelihoods.

It seeks to provide adequate training and knowledge to address issues of WASH, waste, energy and livelihoods; by developing a new outlook regarding communities living in the small cities of India.

  • Encouraging them to change their life styles

Protecting the environment starts with pollution control therefore, youth can help reduce waste by paying attention to minor details in their daily lives, for example, not to take extra plastic bags when we go shopping.
